Excelpoint develops media player for US inmates

Excelpoint Technology says its R&D team has developed an electronic device specially customised for use by inmates in US correctional institutes.

This device is a 2.4 inch Personal Media Player: the first such device in the world to be powered by 2 AAsize batteries that can enable the device to operate for a period of 60 days for music playback.

Created for inmates who are serving terms between one to five years, the device enables inmates to purchase and download music through a central server. It also has a ready platform to download photographs and subsequently undertake certain selected communication functions.

Currently, the majority of inmates are using audio cassette players and audio cassette tapes to play music. Such devices have limited memory capacities and are less durable. The new PMP device, which has been designed to withstand rugged handling and cannot be easily forced open, has the ability to store up to 10,000 songs.

The correctional institutes are a specialised industry that has its own annual conventions addressing various aspects of managing the inmates. These range from suicideresistant toilets to uniforms. In 1997, according to sources in the US, correctional institutes in the country houses about two million inmates with an estimated budget of US$5 billion ($6.2 billion) for federal inmates.
