StarHub Q1 net profit +62%, pay TV revenue falls

StarHub (STAR.SI), Singapore’s second-biggest telecommunications firm, said on Wednesday its first quarter net profit rose 62% year-on-year, helped by higher operating income and lower expenses.

The company reported net profit of $69.1 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2011, compared with $42.7 million a year ago.

Revenue from fixed network services registered the highest growth of 4.6% for the quarter, followed by mobile services at 3.3%.

However, pay TV revenue fell 9.9% to $91.6 million mainly due to the lower pricing and smaller subscriber base for the firm’s sports programmes. StarHub lost the rights to broadcast English Premier League soccer last year to rival Singapore Telecommunications (STEL.SI).
