Australia court hearing on Tiger flying ban adjourned

Australia’s air safety regulator says it still hopes to resolve the future of budget carrier Tiger Airways’ (TAHL.SI) Australian operations by the end of the month after plans for a court hearing Friday to extend a flying ban were suspended.

Australia halted Tiger’s local flights on safety grounds on July 2, the first time a carrier’s entire fleet has been grounded in the country.

A Federal Court hearing scheduled for Friday to consider extending the flying ban had been vacated, a court spokesman said Thursday.

“That means the parties, by mutual consent, don’t want the hearing to go ahead,” the spokesman said, adding it was unclear if the hearing would be rescheduled.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said it expected the hearing to be adjourned until next week and the flying ban would remain in force for the time being.

“Our intention is to finalise the matter on or before August 1,” a CASA spokesman said.

Tiger Airways was not immediately available for comment.
