DAILY DETAIL
Growth worries have hit the aussie hard today, as investors try to cope with both the eurozone debt crisis and a US economy that seems to be rapidly running out of steam. Australian miner Rio Tinto has not helped matters by issuing a warning about future weakness in commodity prices, which would naturally hurt the resource-focused Australian economy. Added to this, Australian non-mining companies are expected to report weaker earnings in upcoming weeks, highlighting the gulf between the economy’s various sectors. Tomorrow, the Reserve Bank of Australia releases its quarterly statement on monetary policy, with everyone likely going straight for the consumer price index forecasts, given that it was the key driver behind their tightening bias in May. Trading in AUD/USD will likely focus on the US release of non-farm payrolls data for July, and macroeconomic events in both the US and Europe will likely drive this currency pair in the short term.
