Shell to halt Singapore refinery over two days after fire

Royal Dutch Shell Plc said it is carrying out a progressive shutdown of its refinery in Singapore over the next two days after fighting a fire at the Pulau Bukom site for a second day.

The shutdown is a precautionary measure, not because of damage, Martijn van Koten, Shell’s vice-president for eastern manufacturing operations, said at an evening press briefing in Singapore today. Loading wharfs at the site, which is on a small island south of Singapore itself, are still in operation though Shell has turned tankers away from berths near to the fire for safety reasons, he said. The plant’s capacity is 500,000 barrels a day.
