Shares gain on Europe hopes; CapitaLand up

Singapore shares rose by midday on Wednesday, led by gains in property developer CapitaLand (CATL.SI), and on optimism that European leaders will take strong steps to resolve the region's debt crisis at a summit later this week.
At 1:00 p.m., the Straits Times Index (STI) <.FTSTI> was up 0.69%, or 19.08 points, at 2,768.32. Around 484.4 million shares worth $366.8 million were traded, compared with 438.1 million shares worth $351.5 million that changed hands by the same time on Tuesday.
