STI falls 0.2% to 3,187.72 at closing

Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.2% to 3,187.72 as at the close. Five stocks dropped for every four that gained in the benchmark index of 30 companies.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.6 times estimated earnings, compared with about 15.6 times at the end of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market.
Aztech Group
(AZ SP), an electronics manufacturer, slipped 4.3% to 15.5 cents. The company said it had a first-quarter net loss of $21 million, compared with a net income of $1.6 million a year ago.
 
Broadway Industrial Group (BWAY SP), a maker of components used in disk drives, slumped 3.6% to $1.06. The company said first-quarter net income declined to $9.1 million from $11.9 million a year ago.
 
Olam International (OLAM SP), a supplier of agricultural commodities, fell 1.4% to $2.90. The company said it is offering to buy the rest of NZ Farming Systems Uruguay for 70 New Zealand cents each. The company owns about 78% of the dairy producer.
 
Stats Chippac (STAT SP), a chip-testing and packaging company partly owned by Temasek Holdings, sank 3.3% to 73 cents. The company said first-quarter net income dropped to US$6.3 million ($7.8 million) from US$27.5 million a year earlier.
