Jun 27: Singapore stocks may see weak start on US debt fears; ST Eng in focus

Singapore shares may see a weak start on Wednesday following losses on Wall Street overnight as a stalemate in talks to raise the U.S. debt ceiling kept investors jittery. Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> rose 0.47% to 3,186.57 points on Tuesday. Here are some stocks and factors to watch:

Singapore Technologies Engineering (STEG.SI), the world’s largest aircraft repair firm, may be in focus after it said on Tuesday its aerospace arm had secured over $260 million worth of maintenance contracts in the second quarter.

Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, said on Wednesday it has changed an engine on one of its Airbus A380 aircraft, which failed and forced the superjumbo to return to the city-state.

Budget carrier Tiger Airways (TAHL.SI), which has been facing problems with its domestic operations in Australia, said on Tuesday it will add 6 Airbus (EAD.PA) A320 aircraft in the year to March 2012 for its operations.

SIA Engineering (SIAE.SI) said its first-quarter net profit fell 3.8% to $68.1 million from $70.8 million a year ago, weighed by a fall in revenue from materials.

Singapore airport services firm SATS (SATS.SI) said its net profit for the three months ended June 30 fell 4.1% to $42.5 million from a year ago, weighed by higher operating expenses.

CDL Hospitality Trusts (CDLT.SI) said its income available for distribution in the second quarter rose 31.3% to $31.7 million from $24.1 million a year ago, helped by contributions from recently acquired Studio M Hotel and a one-off $3.3 million property tax refund.

Massage chair maker Osim International (OSIL.SI) said its second-quarter net profit rose 58% to $19 million from $12 million a year earlier, helped by higher sales and better operating efficiency.

The Think Environmental (THEC.SI) said its unit has acquired a new gold mining and exploration license in Ghana and it targets to recover gold by the end of August.
